installing win xp prof sp2 on separate partition

Hi, I have just installed the Vista Beta 2 and would like to install XP on another partition! A new partition is created as specified in help manual, but it seams like Vista is newer and don't allow XP to be installed on an other partition?
Do I have to create a boot CD to get arround this?

Standard and recommended practice in setting up a dual boot configuration : Install "older" OS first. a.g install XP first then Vista.

You need to use a boot manager or install them in the correct order. Otherwise XP will destroy the Vista bootloader. Vista is aware of XP but XP has no idea about Vista.

If XP is booting fine, make the other partition active (with Disk Manager) and then run the Vista setup from your XP desktop. It should come out just as you hoped.

XP (installed on D:) is fine, but I'm not able to make a repair on my C: where Vista is installed. I have to reinstall and then lose all programs that has been installed on Vista!
Can I edit the boot.ini file and add a reference to Vista? or Can I insall a boot-manager on XP that add what ever is necessary to boot.ini?

Vista does not use boot.ini. It uses the boot configuration data store. That's what you overwrote. You would have to create it from scratch, which is doable, but the learning curve is far longer than just reinstalling. Can you see the contents of the Vista partition from XP? If so, copy your files out of it before reinstalling.

Files yes. Programs will have to be reinstalled. If you carefully note where the files were stored, you can copy them back into thier original locations by drag and drop. The Easy Transfer wizard in Vista would do the job but it is beta and is not yet fully reliable, so I would do it the old fashioned way.
